DivvyUp vs Kittysplit

DivvyUp vs Kittysplit: the honest comparison

Kittysplit has been splitting bills since 2012 with no sign-up and no app. DivvyUp goes one step further into the group chat you are already using, and scans your receipts instead of storing them.

The short answer

Kittysplit and DivvyUp both split group costs without anyone creating an account. Kittysplit is a shared link you open in a browser; DivvyUp lives in your WhatsApp group and reads receipt photos with AI instead of asking someone to type each amount. Kittysplit is cheaper; DivvyUp does more of the work.

These two agree on the important thing: nobody should have to make an account to split a dinner bill. Kittysplit does it with a secret link you open in any browser. DivvyUp does it inside WhatsApp, where the group is already talking, and uses AI to read the receipt so nobody types totals. Here is where each one genuinely wins.

💬

A link vs a chat

Kittysplit sends everyone a secret link to open and identify themselves on. DivvyUp has no link to lose. Expenses go in the WhatsApp thread you are already planning the trip in.

📸

Scanning vs attaching

Kittysplit's paid tier lets you attach a receipt photo to an expense, but somebody still types the amount. DivvyUp reads the photo and fills in merchant, total and currency itself.

🌍

Currencies

DivvyUp converts from 160+ currencies at live daily rates and stores the rate and its date on every expense. Kittysplit converts 120+ currencies, but only after the €3 upgrade.

👥

Group size

A free Kitty holds up to 9 people, 100 once upgraded. DivvyUp does not cap the pool. The free allowance is 20 receipts, however many people are splitting them.

❤️

Couples and families

Both handle this. DivvyUp groups couples so they settle as one and supports share weights for kids, included as standard; Kittysplit offers preset splits on the upgrade.

📊

The running total

Type "balance" in the chat for a live dashboard link: totals, categories, and exactly who owes whom. Kittysplit shows the same picture on its own web page.

FAQ

Common questions

Is DivvyUp cheaper than Kittysplit?

No. Kittysplit's upgrade is €3 once per group and DivvyUp's is US$10 once per pool, so Kittysplit is the cheaper tool. Both are one-off payments for the whole group rather than subscriptions or per-person fees, and DivvyUp's first 20 receipts in a pool are free, so a short trip may never reach the unlock.

What does Kittysplit do better?

Price, and a longer track record. It has run since 2012, works in any browser on any device, and its free tier is genuinely usable for a group of up to nine splitting a single currency. If that describes your trip, Kittysplit will do the job for less.

Kittysplit lets me attach receipts. Isn't that the same thing?

Not quite. Attaching stores the photo against an expense you have already typed in. DivvyUp reads the photo. It pulls out the merchant, the total and the currency, converts it to your pool's base currency, and posts it back for you to confirm. The difference shows up on a busy day with eight receipts.

Does anyone have to install an app?

Not for either tool, though for different reasons. Kittysplit opens in a browser (it also has iOS and Android apps as of 2025). DivvyUp runs inside WhatsApp, so there is nothing new to open at all. You message it like you would a person.
