How to use DivvyUp
Everything you can do from WhatsApp β create a pool, log expenses, record payments, group up, fix receipts, and settle fairly. A handful of short steps and a set of example commands you can copy straight into the chat.
Create or join a pool
A pool is the shared tab for one trip. One person creates it and shares the six-character code; everyone else joins from WhatsApp β no app to download.
join BALI24Join an existing pool with its code
Tip: Do not have a code yet? Create a pool in under a minute, then paste the code into your group chat so everyone can join.
Log expenses
Send a photo of a receipt and AI reads the merchant, total, and currency for you. Prefer to type? Just describe the expense. Amounts in another currency are converted to your pool's base currency automatically.
Beers $15Type a quick expense β description and amountDinner at Ocha 68β¬Foreign currency is converted automaticallyπ· (send a receipt photo)AI extracts the merchant, total, and currency$10 personalPeel a personal amount off your last receipt so it is not split@bali Taxi $24In more than one pool? Prefix with @poolname to pick which
Tip: Something on the bill was just yours? Reply $10 personal right after logging it and DivvyUp keeps that amount out of the shared split. The @poolname prefix only matters if you belong to several pools at once β it tells DivvyUp which trip the expense belongs to.
Record settlements
Paid someone back in cash or by transfer? Tell DivvyUp so it updates the balances. Settlements are payments between members, kept separate from trip expenses. You can log your own payment, someone else's, or let DivvyUp walk you through it.
paid Bob $50You paid Bob 50 β clears part of what you oweAnna paid Bob 120Log a payment between two other membersBob paid me 40Record money someone paid yousettleNo details? DivvyUp asks who you paid and how much
Tip: Record settlements as they happen so the who-owes-whom figures stay accurate right up to the final reckoning.
Group with someone and set share weights
Couples and families can group together so their expenses combine and they settle as one unit. The other person confirms the link, and either of you can leave later. Share weights let each member carry a fair portion β handy for a couple, or someone travelling with a child.
group with SarahAsk to link your account with Sarah's so you settle togetheryesAccept a group request someone sent you (or no to decline)ungroupLeave your group and go back to settling soloset my share to 1.5Carry a bigger portion β e.g. travelling with a kid
Tip: Every member has a share weight (default 1.0). Bump it to 1.5 for someone travelling with a kid, so shared costs split by real household size instead of a flat headcount.
Fix and itemise receipts
Got a total or merchant wrong, or want to split a single receipt line-by-line? Ask for your receipts and DivvyUp sends a private link to edit them on the web β no need to re-type anything.
editGet a private link to review and edit your own receiptsreceiptsSame thing β opens your receipt manager on the web
Tip: On the receipt page you can correct the merchant, amount, category, or currency, break a bill into line items, and tick individual items as personal so they stay out of the shared split. The link is yours alone and works for 24 hours.
Get your summary and open the dashboard
Ask for a summary any time to see the running total and who owes whom. DivvyUp replies with the headline numbers and a link to a live, shareable dashboard with categories and settlements.
balanceGet the current total and a link to the live dashboard
Tip: The dashboard link is shareable β drop it in your group chat so everyone can watch the totals update in real time.
More commands
A few more things you can type once your pool is up and running.

Do I need to download an app?οΌ
No. DivvyUp works entirely inside WhatsApp β you add it as a contact and send messages. Everyone in your group uses the app they already have.
What if the AI reads a receipt wrong?οΌ
It is accurate on most receipts, but if a total or merchant looks off you can simply send a corrected expense as text. Nothing is set in stone.
How does currency conversion work?οΌ
Each pool has a base currency you pick when you create it. Log an expense in any currency and DivvyUp converts it to the base currency so every balance is comparable.
Can I be in more than one pool?οΌ
Yes. If you belong to several pools, prefix an expense with @poolname β for example @bali Taxi $24 β to tell DivvyUp which trip it belongs to. Type pools to see all of them.
How do I keep something off the shared split?οΌ
If part of a bill was just for you, reply $10 personal right after logging it. For a detailed receipt, type edit to open your receipt manager on the web, break it into line items, and tick the ones that are personal β everything else stays shared.
What happens when the trip is over?οΌ
Type wrap up to close a finished pool once everyone has settled. It is not deleted β the dashboard still works, and if someone logs a new expense the pool reopens automatically.
